Essentially no difference in performance so far in UI and editing speed. It just seems to bloated garbage with poor optimization. I always thought it may be faster with more cores. Lightroom classic (one of my key apps) runs about as crap on both systems.

However taskbar navigation seems much more useful in windows window previews, close means close, Win+number launches apps. Windows can be a mish-mash as we all know e.g.

Mac OS has nice consistency in the styling of windows. SB3 is room temperature unless you use the GPU The screens both open to the same angle. The SB trackpad is the nicest for finger gliding and clicking out of all windows laptops I have used The haptic click is nicer on the MB but the SB is still satisfying to use. Trackpads do not feel much different honestly. Surprisingly the brightness is very close, I thought the MB would be noticeably brighter given the spec difference

More saturated colors sometimes visible on the MB due to larger color gamut but it is pretty subtle. The MB is pretty mushy, feels like old macbook keyboards. The SB3 has a very nice "crisp" feel with deep travel. Keyboard is definitely much nicer to type on the SB3. But like i said it gets comparatively loud Very impressive CPU power load on the MB. This is based on the readings for package power with intel power gadget. The SB3 can do about 35W for about a second and the does around 28-30W sustained. However it is not surprising as the MB can pull over 80W(!) from the CPU for a few seconds (~5) under a Cinebench R20 run before settling down to about 60-65W sustained. Fans on the MB can get really loud compared to the SB3 tablet fan.

The SB3 has crashed or frozen on me a couple of other times in the last 3 weeks I think there are some display driver issues. This would be quite funny if you ignore the fact that these are both $4000+ AUD laptops. BSOD on the SB3 and black screen with fans at 100% on the Mac. Both machines have crashed in the space of about 2 hours while idling with some apps open. Ok I have had the Mac for one day and here are my first impression in no particular order If you have any questions about SB2 vs SB3 now or anything you would like me to compare when i have the Macbook then let me know. I will post my impressions of the Macbook after I use it for about 2 weeks.

I have a very good feel for the SB2 (used it for 2 years) and pretty good feel for the SB3 (had it for ~3 weeks). I want to use the machines in my workflow and see how the performance differences compare. For example on benchmarks the Surface Book 2 seems significantly worse than a Dell but in my experience I hated using the Dell and really like the Surface Book.

I won't really focus on running benchmarks as there is plenty of that around and I don't think they entirely give a feel for what a laptop is like to use. I will be comparing performance and suitability from my workflow perspective MS Office use, MS Teams, photo editing in Lightroom Classic, CAD in Solidworks, FE simulation with ANSYS. I have a Surface book 3 15" i7/32/1TB/1660 Ti, Surface Book 2 15" i7/16Gb/1TB and will also have a Macbook Pro 16 i9/64GB/5500M/4TB shortly.
